The Cilento Coast: an ancient cradle of civilization; a theater of
myths lost in the mists of time, where Ulysses encountered the Sirens
and Palinuro was shipwrecked. Uncontaminated nature where the Golden
eagle flies and Sea Daffodils blossom. The Cilento, an incomparableheritage
of nature, art, history and legend which UNESCO has added to its World
Heritage List. The Parco Nazionale del Cilento e del Vallo di Diano
guards and protects the area so that it remains intact and can be used
by the widest number of visitors who will be pleasantly surprised by
its many sights.
Where is The Cilento Coast?
The Cilento Coast is the area, which comes after the Amalfi coast,
and after Salerno.
The Cilento coast has so many pretty villages overlooking the sea;
like Agropoli, Castellabate, Agnone, Pioppi, Ascea and Palinuro, or San Giovanni
a Piro, another pretty hilltop village.
- "Agropoli" is the capital of the area in it there is
the many big harbour of the Cilento.
- "Castellabate" is the hill-top village when you can see the
really medieval village, whit its beautiful piazza, nice belvedere, pretty "vicoletti" and
magnificent view of on a clear day the Amalfi coast and Capri island, from
here, you can take a small boat out to an uninhabited islet, also called
Licosa (mermaids of Ulisse).
- "Agnone" the ancient fish village on the coast where you can
see in the evening a very old fisherman comes back after a day of heavy
work in the sea.
- "Pioppi" a pretty village on the beach just ten minutes before
the ruins of Velia.
- "Paestum" there are many Greek ruins: temple of Neptune, and
a temple of Cerere are the best interesting, museum and basilica will be
visit.
- "Palinuro" takes its names Aeneas' pilot Palinurus, who is
supposedly berried here Virgil made the whole story up or the Aeneid.
There are many nice towns on the country, why no visit Padula where is
location Certosa di San Lorenzo, after San Martino in Naples probably the
biggest and richest monastery in the south. Pertosa ands Castelcivita near
the village Controne and Roscigno
Enogastronomical
The Cilento Coast offers many local produce like the buffalo milk mozzarella
and tomatoes which are the ingredients of the original Cilento Mediterranean
diet.
Then there is the extra virgin olive oil; red, white and rose' "Cilento" wine,
which together with Castel San Lorenzo are the park's DOC (denominazione
di origine controllata) wines.
An experience with thousands of facets, the Cilento is not to be missed.
How to get to The Cilento Coast:
It is possible to access the beauties of the Cilento by flying into
Naples and it is possible to pick up a car from Naples airport or the city
centre.
From here just follow the autostrada signposted Salerno Reggio Calabria,
coming off at the right junction.
Alternatively there is a train from Naples and this will connect you
to the main Cilento destinations: Agropoli Castellabate etc.
